"Seize the Day for Epilepsy - Support Awareness and Resources for Those Living with Epilepsy"

WHAT IS EPILEPSY?

“Carpe Diem,” Latin for “Seize the Day,” has long inspired boldness and adventure, calling on people to live fully and fearlessly. Yet for over three million Americans, including 500,000 Floridians, these words carry a profound, different meaning. For those living with epilepsy, “seizing the day” isn’t about daring adventures or carefree pursuits. It’s about rising each day with extraordinary courage to face a condition that can strike without warning. Every moment becomes a triumph over uncertainty, each day a victory over the unseen challenges of epilepsy.

WHAT'S LIFE LOOKS LIKE FOR THOSE LIVING WITH EPILEPSY?

Most people don’t realize that epilepsy affects every aspect of life. In a recent survey, over 80% of U.S. adults had little understanding of the day-to-day impact of epilepsy. Many assume it only involves occasional seizures, unaware of the cognitive, physical, and emotional challenges that often accompany the condition.

For those living with epilepsy, it’s far more complex. The condition can limit employment opportunities, independence, and social connections. Over time, the cumulative effects of seizures can lead to greater physical, emotional, and cognitive difficulties, requiring more support year after year. Many individuals with epilepsy cannot drive or work, and they often rely on essential services like transportation, seizure-response training, access to seizure-alert dogs, and psychological care to navigate daily life.

WHO WE ARE

As the leading epilepsy support organization in Florida, Epilepsy Alliance Florida provides essential resources and unwavering support to individuals and families navigating life with epilepsy. With eight regional offices across the state, we offer services to those impacted by epilepsy throughout Florida, with a direct responsibility for 38 of the state’s 67 counties.

Many of those we serve rely on us for critical support that goes beyond what health insurance covers, from specialized resources to direct assistance. The majority of our work is made possible by the generosity of donors who believe in our mission.

In addition to providing direct support, Epilepsy Alliance Florida is a strong advocate for the rights and needs of people with epilepsy at the local, county, state, and national levels, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs met.

WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT DO PEOPLE LIVING WITH EPILEPSY NEED?

People living with epilepsy often require a lifetime of comprehensive support to navigate the complexities of the condition. This includes a broad spectrum of services, such as support groups for individuals and their caregivers, seizure-response training, medical services, and psychological counseling. For some, service dogs trained to detect seizures can be a vital source of safety and independence.

Additionally, access to telemedicine and specialized medical care can make a significant difference, especially for those in remote areas. Coordinating these services often requires dedicated case management to ensure individuals can access the right resources at the right time, tailored to their unique needs.

These layers of support empower those living with epilepsy to lead safer, more fulfilling lives, despite the daily challenges they face.

HOW ARE THESE SERVICES FUNDED?

For many people living with epilepsy, health insurance covers only a fraction of the necessary support. To access vital services—from specialized medical care to daily living assistance—many rely on organizations like Epilepsy Alliance Florida. While we receives some funding through grants, the majority of our programs and services are made possible through donations from compassionate supporters.
