Meet Teo Vasconcellos, an inspiring 18-year-old boy who came to the U.S. from Argentina in 2016. At the age of four, he was diagnosed with grand mal and absence seizures. However, upon arriving in the U.S. with his mother and siblings, Teo faced the challenge of not having insurance to consult a neurologist or pediatrician. Despite daily seizures and lack of medication, his journey took a positive turn when his mother discovered Epilepsy Alliance Florida – a crucial lifeline in their challenging journey.

Through Epilepsy Alliance Florida, Teo receives case management that opens doors to much-needed and no-cost neurological services and vital medication assistance from the Department of Health. Additionally, he gains access to regular care with a pediatrician.

Despite his ongoing struggles with epilepsy, Teo finds solace in knowing he has access to the necessary care. Regular check-ups with a neurologist include essential labs and exams. As an 18-year-old, he faces challenges in communication. Epilepsy Alliance Florida steps in, offering counseling that equips Teo with tools for more effective communication with his mother, fostering a stronger and improved relationship between them. In addition, Teo’s passion for playing soccer is a significant part of his life. Despite soccer being a trigger for his epilepsy, counseling empowers Teo with tools to balance his love for the sport and his neurological health. He now understands when to give his body the rest it needs, ensuring he can continue playing while caring for his well-being. Teo remains optimistic about improving seizure activity and is determined to continue playing soccer as long as he can.

The Vasconcellos family has expressed deep gratitude for the ongoing support provided by Epilepsy Alliance Florida. Eager to remain involved, they look forward to participating in future activities like the organization’s annual Walk the Talk event later this year.
