Epilepsy Alliance Florida has been a major support system in Raquel Cordovi’s faith to move forward after being diagnosed with epilepsy as an adult

I started experiencing seizures as an adult. At first, there was no clear diagnosis. I would be found “passed out” and it took many sleep studies and tests to conclude there are several areas in my brain that have overactive electrical impulses and attribute to my seizures. I’ve also gone through lots of trial and error with medication and, most recently, a VNS surgery.

I was referred to Epilepsy Alliance Florida by my previous neurologist because he was worried about the way I was internalizing my new diagnosis. With the help of Epilepsy Alliance Florida, I was able to come to terms with my diagnosis and learn that I could still live a full life despite having epilepsy. Support groups, counseling sessions, and one-on-one phone calls with my case manager helped me realize it wasn’t the end of the world. Yes, things would be different and I would need more support – but I found that strength to carry forward with Epilepsy Alliance Florida and my family.

Along with my family and friends, I’ve participated in virtual and in-person support groups, client dinners, Zoo Miami events, and lots of fundraising initiatives. I love being involved in this community and have made many friends along the way. I think this comradery made me realize that there are others who face similar challenges. It helped me realize that I am not alone. Thanks to Epilepsy Alliance Florida, I have a more positive outlook on life. I know I can have a meaningful life and still be an active member in my community.

I have so much to look forward to and attribute my success to the loving support of my family and care team around me. Soon, my daughters will graduate, and I get to watch them start their own independent lives. I can’t believe I’ll soon be an empty nester! I also made the decision to go back to school and complete my master’s degree in business administration.

Something I want to tell others going through similar struggles is this: Believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid to seek support from others. And most importantly, remember that this diagnosis does not define who you are – we define ourselves.
