Seizure Recognition and Response

Seizure Recognition and Response: Empowering You to Help

Understanding Seizures: What to Look For?

Seizures, a common symptom of epilepsy and other neurological conditions, can manifest in various ways. Recognizing a seizure is the first step in providing effective aid. Common signs include sudden loss of consciousness, uncontrollable jerking movements, stiffening of the body, loss of muscle control, and confusion or disorientation after the seizure.

Creating a Seizure-Ready Environment

Educating yourself and others about seizure response is just one aspect of support. Creating a seizure-safe environment, both at home and in public spaces, can significantly reduce injury risks during seizures.

This includes:

  • Making living spaces clutter-free to avoid injury during a fall.
  • Using seizure alarms for those with frequent seizures.
  • Educating family, friends, and coworkers about seizure response.

Response for Seizures: Your Immediate Response

Knowing how to respond when someone has a seizure is vital. Here’s how you can help:

  1. Stay Calm: Keep yourself and others calm.
  2. Ensure Safety: Move dangerous objects away from the person to prevent injury.
  3. Position Comfortably: Gently guide the person to the ground and turn them onto their side to aid breathing.
  4. Time the Seizure: Note how long the seizure lasts.
  5. Do Not Restrain: Avoid restraining their movements.
  6. Check for Medical ID: Look for any medical information that can assist in care.
  7. Do Not Put Anything in Their Mouth: Contrary to popular belief, this can cause more harm.
  8. Stay Until Recovery: Remain with the person until they are fully aware again.
  9. Seek Medical Help if Necessary: Call for medical help if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, the person is injured, or if this is their first seizure.
