Navigating Joy: Liam’s Journey with Epilepsy Alliance Florida’s Support

Liam was just four years old when he experienced his first seizure and was subsequently diagnosed with epilepsy. Following an EEG, it was discovered that Liam has a genetic disorder called Angelman Syndrome. This condition leads to delayed development, challenges with speech and balance, intellectual disability, and sometimes seizures. However, people with Angelman Syndrome, like Liam, are often known for their joyful and excitable personalities, frequently smiling and laughing.

Despite the challenges that come with Angelman Syndrome, Liam is a vibrant and active second grader who brings joy to those around him. He eagerly rides the bus to school each day, a part of his routine that he absolutely loves. Although there have been obstacles, particularly in ensuring that his Individualized Education Program (IEP) is fully implemented, Liam’s mother has worked tirelessly alongside the Epilepsy Alliance Florida (EAFLA) School Advocate to make sure that Liam receives the support he needs. Their persistence has paid off—this year, Liam has an assistant teacher in his classroom, as well as access to language and physical therapies, all of which encourage him to be as independent as possible.

EAFLA has been a crucial part of Liam’s journey, providing support and resources that have made a significant difference in his life. They provided Liam with a medical ID bracelet to alert first responders to his condition in case of an emergency and assisted his family in securing an appointment with a neurologist. Beyond medical support, EAFLA has also connected the family with community resources for immigrant services, dental care, and medications. Liam and his family have participated in events like the West Palm Children’s Holiday Party, and his mother has found valuable connections through online support groups.

Looking ahead, EAFLA remains committed to supporting Liam and his mother in every aspect of their journey. They will continue to collaborate with his mother and the school to ensure that Liam not only flourishes in his education but also enjoys a balanced and fulfilling life.
