Guidance to a Successful and Independent Life: Mariana Gavira’s Journey

Mariana Gavira is a remarkable and resilient young woman who embodies strength and independence. Her journey with epilepsy began during her early teenage years, presenting her with numerous challenges. At the time of her first seizure, Mariana was in middle school, navigating the difficulties of adolescence. Adding to this, her family had just moved to Miami from Colombia, and they found themselves facing this new reality without much support or resources.

Fortunately, a family friend introduced them to Epilepsy Alliance Florida (EAFLA). At a time when they were desperately seeking support, education, and medical assistance—especially as they were uninsured—EAFLA stepped in to provide much-needed help.

Mariana’s journey with medication management was far from easy. Her first prescribed medication not only failed to control her seizures but actually made them worse. The second medication, while effective in stopping her seizures, brought severe side effects that took a toll on her self-esteem—an especially challenging issue for a young high school student. Despite these hardships, Mariana persevered. Eventually, she was switched to a third medication that controlled her seizures without the previous debilitating side effects.

Today, Mariana is proud to be over 20 years seizure-free. She is deeply grateful to EAFLA for the life-changing support they provided to her and her family. Through education, psychological services, community resources, and school advocacy, EAFLA helped Mariana transition from relying solely on her family to becoming a self-sufficient adult. Now, she has completed her education, works full-time, and is fully independent. Mariana credits EAFLA with offering the guidance she needed and opening doors to opportunities that have paved the way for her success and independence.
